Job Purpose
The role of a Load Master is critical to the success of Emirates SkyCargo’s flight operations. The position involves planning and coordinating aircraft loading activities before departure and accompanying flights during charter and scheduled operations when required. The Load Master ensures that all cargo handling, loading, and unloading procedures are completed safely, efficiently, and fully aligned with Emirates operational standards, airport regulations, and international aviation requirements.
This role requires strong operational knowledge, decision-making ability, and attention to detail to guarantee smooth ground operations and secure cargo transportation.
Key Responsibilities
Flight and Ground Handling Planning
The Load Master is responsible for carrying out detailed operational planning before each flight. This includes confirming that all required ground handling arrangements are organised at the departure airport, destination airport, and any transit or en-route stations.
The successful candidate must gather and verify operational information relating to airports, cargo specifications, and ground handling agents to ensure readiness before aircraft arrival. Cargo loads must be planned and built according to Emirates loading standards while meeting all safety and regulatory requirements.
Cargo Loading Supervision
A major responsibility of the role involves supervising Ground Handling Agents (GHA) to ensure loading operations are performed correctly and efficiently.
The Load Master oversees cargo optimisation to maximise aircraft capacity while ensuring safe weight distribution and accommodating special cargo requirements. Loading instruction reports must be prepared accurately and issued promptly so that loading activities can begin without delay.
The position also requires monitoring unloading operations at destination airports to ensure cargo is discharged safely, efficiently, and according to operational procedures.
Special attention must be given to time-sensitive, temperature-controlled, and pharmaceutical shipments. The Load Master ensures these shipments are handled in full compliance with European Union Good Distribution Practice (EU GDP) regulations and maintains cargo integrity throughout transportation.
Aircraft Weight and Balance Management
The Load Master carries direct responsibility for aircraft weight and balance calculations.
This includes preparing trim sheets, determining load distribution, and ensuring that all aircraft weight and balance documentation is completed accurately and submitted to the Pilot-in-Command before departure. Clear loading and unloading instructions must be issued to support safe aircraft operations.
Accurate calculations are essential to maintaining aircraft stability, performance, and operational safety.
Destination and Operational Coordination
Upon arrival at destination stations, the Load Master ensures that all required operational documentation is collected and verified.
This includes obtaining General Declarations, weather reports, and flight plans from Ground Handling Agents and relevant airport authorities. Effective coordination with local stakeholders is essential to avoid operational disruptions and maintain smooth turnaround performance.
On-Time Performance and Delay Management
The Load Master plays an important role in supporting flight punctuality and operational reliability.
The position is accountable for helping maintain acceptable on-time departure performance across operations. When delays are anticipated, the Load Master coordinates with flight crew and crew accommodation providers to adjust crew reporting and hotel arrangements where necessary, ensuring compliance with crew duty time limitations and minimising operational impact.
Stakeholder and Customer Service Management
Maintaining strong working relationships with operational partners is essential in this role.
The Load Master regularly communicates with Ground Handling Agents, Line Maintenance Engineers, airport authorities, and other operational teams to ensure consistent delivery of high customer service standards and seamless cargo operations.
Strong communication and collaboration skills are required to resolve operational challenges and maintain efficiency under demanding conditions.
Aircraft Equipment and System Assessment
The role includes assessing the condition and serviceability of aircraft loading systems and cargo handling equipment.
Where defects or technical concerns are identified, the Load Master liaises with Engineering teams to arrange corrective action. During periods of restricted equipment availability, operational limitations and safety precautions must be identified and implemented until systems are restored.
Special Cargo and Groom Coordination
For flights carrying specialised cargo requiring accompanying grooms, the Load Master ensures all accompanying personnel are authorised and correctly documented.
Identity verification is conducted prior to boarding, and close coordination with grooms and flight crew is maintained to determine the safest and most efficient loading positions for specialised cargo.
Aircraft Security and Safety Compliance
Aircraft security remains a core responsibility of the Load Master position.
The role requires conducting security inspections of the main deck cargo compartment to confirm that no unauthorised or dangerous items are present that could compromise flight safety. All aircraft pre-flight security procedures and preparation activities must be carried out in accordance with Flight Operations Manual requirements and established Emirates procedures.
Dangerous Goods Handling
The Load Master is also responsible for overseeing dangerous goods (DG) inspections related to aircraft loading and handling operations.
The role involves responding to DG-related incidents while the aircraft is on the ground and ensuring all required permits, approvals, and supporting documentation accompany dangerous or restricted cargo categories.
This includes specialised shipments such as live animals (AVI) and dangerous goods requiring regulatory clearance at transit and destination airports. Proper documentation and compliance procedures are essential to preventing operational complications and maintaining safety standards.
Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this position, candidates should possess substantial experience and technical expertise within airline cargo and ground handling operations.
Applicants must have a minimum of five years of experience across cargo, airline, or ground handling environments within a major international airport.
Candidates should have completed at least 12 years of formal schooling or an equivalent educational qualification.
Professional training requirements include successful completion of:
- Load Control Level 1 and Level 2
- Dangerous Goods Acceptance Training
- Aircraft Loading and Handling Training
- Special Cargo Handling Training, including IATA Live Animals Regulations (LAR)
Applicants should also possess strong knowledge of both local and international customs, immigration, and aviation security regulations.
A demonstrated understanding of Good Distribution Practice (GDP), gained through professional experience and formal training, is highly important for this role.
The ideal candidate must be capable of working independently with minimal supervision while demonstrating strong written and verbal communication skills. Excellent interpersonal abilities, sound judgement, and the capacity to perform effectively under operational pressure are essential.
